Internship Programs in Bali

My Fashion Internship Experience for a Women's Clothing and Homewares Company in Canggu, Bali

"After my internship program I am even more certain – the people and just the many options you have are insane. Especially networking is so much easier in Bali, than anywhere else in the world. I would recommend anyone who is interested in fashion or marketing to take this opportunity!" Ayu, Bachelor of Arts in Transculturality

There are a lot of benefits from doing an internship, especially abroad, away from home. It is an exciting experience by itself, and also can help someone define their future career path. Such as what happened with Ayu, the German lady discovered her passion during her brief and meaningful internship moment in Bali. Here's her complete story as told to Bali Internships.

Before coming to Bali, Ayu admitted she was not really sure what kind of direction she wanted to go career wise. But as an avid learner, she already finished her degree at Heinrich-Heine University of Germany before deciding to hone her skills abroad. "My passion for fashion started when I was little and as I got older I became aware of the impact of fast fashion and other factors on our environment," she explained. "I spent a lot of my leisure time in the field of fashion and the ways in which the industry can be improved"

Ayu chose Bali not by coincidence. She actually inherited Balinese blood from her father. She has already spent a handful of time in Indonesia as well and witnessed the change in the country's fashion industry in particular, year after year. "I would love to learn more about the concept and planning that is necessary to run a fashion company, especially in a place like Bali". Ayu had already volunteered for a Turtle Conservation in Sanur, back in 2019. So the choice is obvious. She decided to go on for a slightly longer stay at her father's home island, this time as a part of Bali Internships.

During her internship time, Ayu interned with an upscale Boutique in Berawa area of Canggu. She was understandably nervous on her first day, but soon became acquainted and comfortable after knowing that she will intern with an amazing and caring person-in-charge. "After a short drive we arrived at the boutique and the owner, Jennifer welcomed us very kindly. I was relieved! After a short introduction I got to meet my future colleagues – a small team of wonderful woman" Ayu said. On her first day, she recalls that she also get to join the fun celebrating the birthday of Jennifer's dog, Bertie. "Everyone from the team gathered in the office and we had a lot of fun. Afterwards we went back to her internship," she gleefully recalls.

Immediately, Ayu feels right at home. She said that she was 'very lucky' to be a part of the boutique. She was able to connect not only with her boss, Jennifer, but also the rest of the team. "Most important was that I was included in all of the tasks and I was able to give my input, even though I was new in the team" said Ayu. "The interactions in the team were always very warm. There was deep interest in the well-being of the others in the team. People helped each other out and we often went for lunch together".

Ayu also described her tasks and responsibilities, she was entrusted with during her internship. From planning the social media management on the boutique's official instagram, checking on production, organizing photoshoot / event, checking consignment to communication with clients and customers. These tasks could be overwhelming, but since she was in a very positive and supportive environment, Ayu did all her job desk with passion and excellence, while gaining precious knowledge and experience that would shape her professional skill further for the future. "I am now sure what I want to do career wise and I want to continue to keep in contact with with my host company. It was really hard to leave, since there was so much more to learn and to accomplish. There was this feeling like I have known them for a long time" she said.

Ayu was having a blast during her internship time, not only on her internship days, but also the precious break time in-between. She used this to explore the island to its fullest, even went on a trip to Lovina beach at the Northern side of Bali! "I loved the trip to Lovina. Looking for dolphins and spending the day at waterfalls, water temples and so much more!" she said. As a half-native, Ayu also shares some of her most favorite seaside destinations on the island; most of them are truly underrated. "Uluwatu beaches are the best, like Pantai Nyang Nyang," she said. "I love Pantai Pasut too, and also the beaches at Gilis island of Lombok. Do a sunset snorkeling trip here, and see for yourself!". Ayu also had some memorable field trips with the boutique. "We took part in the Summer Fights in Canggu, we acquired new clients, had many photo shootings, a business trip to Bandung – so no day was like the other"

Asked to summarize her entire internship experience, Ayu said that the program provided by Bali Internships was 'more than fulfilling'. She said that she didn't have any bad experience at all, and cannot wait to come back. "Personally, I have learned how to build a new life in a new country. Meeting new people, traveling while doing an internship, living alone and so much more" Ayu said. "After my program I am even more certain – the people and just the many options you have are insane. Especially networking is so much easier in Bali, than anywhere else in the world. I would recommend anyone who is interested in fashion or marketing to take this opportunity!"
